Movies & Books #1

I recommend :

Films:

Phoenix, Oregon  was the highest grossing film at the US box office for three weeks in March and April 2020.  I watched this twice,  surprising myself that the ending I fell happily asleep with, was not the real ending which was much different.  Uplifting.  (USA)  Phoenix is in southern Oregon , just up the 5 from Ashland.  See Phoenix on  Google Maps.

Antonia's Line  a bevy of characters in a small village.  Feminist heavy, plenty of good  quirky people and one really bad guy.(Dutch)

Schneider vs. Bax  another  character heavy film, this with only 6 actors, trying to kill each other ... for unexplained reasons.... in a bird sanctuary.   (Dutch)

Teddy Bear Humanizes the body builder. Frustrated in finding a local girlfriend in Denmark,  Dennis goes to Thailand to look around.  It is not a gay film.   (Danish)

Books:

Shipwreck: A Saga of Sea Tragedy and Sunken Treasure  by Dave Horner, a Maritime Historian.  The author has burrowed through archives of Spanish documents (in Spain and South America) to recreate the shipwrecks of  Galleons carrying treasure.  The first person accounts from the educated passengers and crew are gripping.

The descriptions of the galleons poking around mid ocean, then striking a sand bar, then a reef and then another....often in the dark....and then floundering within minutes are wrenching.  The intrigue and thievery involved  with the transport show that even while trying to save their own lives, peoples greed will continue.
